OLD 42>
Here we honour one of the most popular tourist attractions Cape Breton has ever known..Old 42.
The Repton
In March, 1974, the Repton rolled into Glace Bay as the latest aquisition to the Cape Breton Steam Railway. The '4-4-0' Schools Class locomotive was obtained from the Steamtown Railroad Museum. She was a product of the Eastleigh Locomotive Works, built in 1934 and designed by R.E.L. Mounsel for Southern Railway of England. The 'New Girl', as she was affectionately known, is representative of a type of locomotive designed to operate at high speeds over a system where the operation of larger engines was not permitted due to loading guage and weight restrictions. When they first went into service the Schools Class were the most powerful 4-4-0 type in Europe, and throughout their career on the Southern Railway they performed outstanding service. Upon her arrival in Glace Bay the 926 was completely over-hauled by the roundhouse crew which again rose to the occasion. Vital Statistics Built-----------1934 Builder---------Eastleigh Works, S.R.
