Welcome McVicars And Friends
____________to the McVicar family website. This website was originally built in January 2002 and has grown beyond my wildest dreams. I hope you enjoy your visit and return often. Please sign Guest Book #5, I would love to know you stopped by...Brian McVicar
Our branch of the McVicar Family was created by the coming together of McDonalds, McVicars, Russells, and Campbells. The photo below is of Joseph & Gertrude(nee Davies) Russell with little Winnifred, my father's mother. This photo was taken shortly before they left for Canada.
Until recently we believed that we were 75% Scottish and 25% English, but we have recently learned from Mom's sister Trisha, the lineage of our Grandmother Tina is 50% German. So that adds some real spice to the soup. We hope to have more on this side of the family soon.
Although the complete family history is on the last page of this site,in great detail, here is the beginning of our clan:

Gilford Robert McVicar married Iris Marie McDonald at Saint Mary's Church, Glace Bay, on April 25,1952. Rev. Crewe officiated and the wedding party consisted of Dad's brother Joe and Mom's first cousin Sally Johnson. Dad was 18 and Mom was 17 at the time.
Dad was already working on the S&L as a brakeman, and Mom at the candy counter of the "15", as she liked to call Woolworth's on Commercial Street. At first they lived in an apartment on MacLain St. When Dads sister was about to have a baby in Ontario, they gave up the apartment & moved into Dad's parents house in Passchendaele (No.11) so his mother could go to Ontario to help out. They stayed there for two months or so until Dads mother came back. They then moved to their new apartment on Winnifred Square near Dad's work. There is a coincidence in the street name as Dad's mother's name was Winnifred. This home stands to this day directly behind the Funeral Home where Mom was so prematurely visited in death by so many of us.

Many think, because of their young age at marriage, there may have been a child on the way. However, this is not true. Indeed, over the years, Mom many times told me of the frustration and worry she experienced in not being able to get pregnant soon after marriage. It was indeed nearly a year after the marriage that the first child was conceived. Once they got it all figured out there was no holding them back and all in all six healthy children were born to the family. Every one of us were born at The Glace Bay General Hospital:
-Robert Gregory born Dec.3,1953
-Brian Patrick born June 2,1957
-Melodie Laurette born Nov.11,1958
-Kirby Shawn born April 24,1961
-Kristal Dawn born April 12,1963
-Trina Lorine born May 7,1965
After Bob was born, the family moved from Winnifred Sq. to Bruce St.; then to 38 Highland St. where Brian and Melodie where born; then next door to 36 Highland Street where Kirby and Kristal joined the family; and then to 31 Pleasant Street where Trina found her way into the clan. The family remained there until 1975 when we became Phalen Rd. dwellers. Mom loved the land and gardens at Phalen's Rd. but unfortunately did not get to enjoy them for long. She died on Oct.6,1976.
Some variations in the spelling of our name that we have come across are:
Vicarii (3rd Century)
M'Bhiocair
Mac a' Bhiocair
Makuecar (1488)
Makfikar (1502)
M’Yvicare (1529)
Makwicar (1530)

M'Vicar (1580)
