Descendants of Angus MACVICAR

First Generation

Angus MACVICAR was born in 1800 in North Uist, Scotland. He died in 1869 in Broughton, C.B. Co., NS and was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Hornes Road, Mira.

The MACVICAR families of North Uist were very well known among the common people since the sixteenth century when Donald, the Big Vicar (Am Piocair Mor) represented the old Medieval Celtic Church in North Uist. The origins of Donald are not entirely clear but his family is believed to have come from the Loch Fyne area of Argyll in the fourteenth century. It is thought that the name MACVICAR originated in this area in the thirteenth century.

One of the strongholds of the Celtic Church in North Uist was the Trinity Temple, or Teampull na Trionaid, in Carinish. Tradition states that Teampull na Trionaid was built by Amie MacRuari, wife of John, first Lord of the Isles, but although it seems highly probable that Amie may have had it repaired and enlarged around 1350-1390, the theory of its foundation by her is no longer accepted. Another theory suggests the temple was founded as early as 1203. Attached to the Trinity Temple is a structure known as Teampull Clann a' Phiocair, or Macvicar Temple, which appears to date from approximately the same time period. According to tradition, and there is some basis in fact, the Trinity Temple was a university of learning, at least at the time of Amie MacRuari. Besides its academic function, the temple had schools for music, embroidery, leather work and distillation of herbs. The accepted theory is that the progenitors of the MACVICAR families of North Uist journeyed from the collegiate church of Kilmun in Argyllshire.

In the latter part of the sixteenth century, the old Celtic Church was losing its power as a result of the Reformation. Consequently, the land was in demand. The Macdonalds of Sleat, under Donald Gorm of Sleat, were determined to have North Uist and would do so with the help of the chief of Clan Campbell and the Scottish Government. In 1581, the Big Vicar was called away to a Church conference in Edinburgh. Hugh Macdonald, son of Archibald the clerk of Sleat in Skye who was the nephew of Donald Gorm, went to North Uist and proceeded to murder all four of the Big Vicar's sons, thereby taking control and forever relegating the MACVICAR families to be tenants on North Uist. This act was commemorated in a poem written by a daughter of the Big Vicar called Uisdean Mac Gille-easbuig Chleirich, or Hugh Son of Archibald the Clerk.

The Big Vicar had a family of at least four sons and three daughters. The sons were Donald, John, Angus and Hector. Donald, who lived near Carinish, is known to have descendants in the Knockline area on the west side of North Uist by 1800. The father of Angus is unknown at the present time but it is believed, by using the Scottish naming conventions, to be John. John may have originated on the northern part of North Uist in the Vallay or Sollas area but was moved to the southern part of the island around 1814 with his family. A John MACVICAR appears in the rent rolls for Grimsay in 1814. The 1828 rent rolls list an Angus MACVICAR nearby on what was known as the Carinish Moss Crofts, who appears to be our Angus. The moss crofts were the poorest land available and the 1828 and 1833 rent rolls show Angus to be in arrears. It was most likely this that prompted Angus to emigrate in 1835 with his young family, and no doubt with some assistance from the landlord who was all too willing to get rid of his crofters. Many people emigrated from North Uist to Cape Breton from 1828 to 1842, including some of Angus' relatives.

When Angus and his family arrived in Cape Breton they first settled somewhere along the Mira River as this is where Donald stated he was born on his marriage certificate. It is quite possible they settled at or near Catalone where some of Angus' relatives settled or Mira where Effie's brothers settled. In 1842 they moved to Loch Lomond to obtain their own land which they did by squatting as no deed or grant was issued for the land. According to Angus' grandson Duncan, the land was where the old Presbyterian Church once stood. It was here they raised their family and farmed. In April,1863, they sold their land to John MACDONALD for $240.00, as by this time, they were rightful owners. It is not known exactly why they sold the property in Loch Lomond. It may have been to return to the Mira area to be close to relatives. The family settled in what was known as the Cow Bay Back Lands to the rear of Cow Bay (Port Morien) and Mira which was later known as Milton and finally Broughton. Angus worked the land in Broughton until his death a few years later.

Angus married Euphemia MACQUEEN, daughter of Unknown MACQUEEN, about 1828 in North Uist, Scotland. Euphemia was born in 1804 in North Uist, Scotland. She died on 9 Jan 1901 in Broughton, C.B. Co., NS and was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Hornes Road, Mira.

Effy appears to have been the sister of Angus MACQUEEN and Rory (Pomona) MACQUEEN who also settled in Cape Breton.

Angus and Euphemia had the following children:

-John MACVICAR was born in 1830 and died on 27 Nov 1871.

-Rachel MACVICAR was born on 1 Oct 1832 in North Uist, Scotland. She died about 1905 in Broughton, C.B. Co., NS and was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Hornes Road, Mira.

Unmarried, Rachel worked as a weaver at home. According to her nephew, Duncan MACVICAR, Rachel was alive in the early part of the century as he remembered her but could not remember when she died. She was still living at the time of the 1901 Census.

-Donald (Woodill) MACVICAR was born on 31 Oct 1837 and died about 1908.

-Angus D MACVICAR was born on 10 Sep 1844 and died on 26 May 1919.

-Duncan MACVICAR was born on 15 Apr 1847 in Loch Lomond, Rich.Co.NS. He died about 1919 in USA.

Duncan left home in 1871 and went to the USA as a sailor.

Second Generation

-John MACVICAR (Angus) was born in 1830 in North Uist, Scotland. He died on 27 Nov 1871 in Dartmouth, Hfx.Co., NS.

John left Loch Lomond before 1860 to work in Dartmouth. He worked as a labourer and died quite young, apparently from appendicitis.

John married Martha Jane MACKAY, daughter of Jervis MACKAY and Mary DUNNO, on 28 May 1860 in Dartmouth, Hfx.Co., NS. Martha was born in 1841 in Dartmouth, Hfx.Co., NS. She died on 31 May 1892 in Dartmouth, Hfx. Co., NS and was buried on 3 June 1892.

After John's death, Martha was known as Martha ELLIOT. Although a second marriage was not found, it is possible she married after 1871 and was widowed before 1881.

John and Martha had the following children:

-Mary MACVICAR was born on 12 June 1861 and died on 10 Jan 1949.

-Euphemia MACVICAR was born on 5 Oct 1862 and died on 17 Jan 1945.

-Sarah MACVICAR was born in 1864 and died before 1922.

-Louisa MACVICAR was born on 24 Feb 1867.

-Donald (Woodill) MACVICAR (Angus) was born on 31 Oct 1837 in Mira, C.B.Co., NS. He died about 1908 in Glace Bay, C.B.Co., NS.

Donald was a miner at the Blockhouse Mine in Cow Bay (Port Morien) since 1868 and moved to Glace Bay before 1891 to work as an engineer in the Caledonia Mine (Dominion No. 4). His actual date of death is unknown. His granddaughter Dolly (STILLMAN) MACINTOSH believes he and Kate are buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay but there is some evidence to suggest they may be buried in Riverside Cemetery, Hornes Road.

Donald married Catherine MACINNIS, daughter of Norman MACINNIS and Mary LAMOND, on 8 Dec 1868 in Sydney, C.B. Co., NS. Catherine was born on 5 Oct 1851 in Mira Back Lands, C.B. Co., NS. She died about 1910 in Glace Bay, C.B.Co., NS.

They had the following children:

-Angus MACVICAR was born on 8 Nov 1869 in Port Morien, CB Co., NS. He died on 9 Nov 1870 in Port Morien, CB Co., NS.

-Catherine Flora MACVICAR was born on 2 Jan 1871 and died on 14 Oct 1946.

-Norman MACVICAR was born on 14 Apr 1879 in Port Morien, CB Co., NS. He died on 28 Oct 1942 in Drumheller, AB.

Before Norman went to Alberta he worked in Caledonia Colliery where he was injured in an accident in 1904, the same one in which his brother-in-law Silas STILLMAN was injured. He suffered severe burns to his face and hands & lost an eye.

-Neil A. MACVICAR was born on 2 Aug 1882 and died after 1955.

-Anne MACVICAR was born in 1884 in Port Morien, CB Co., NS.

-Christie Effie MACVICAR was born on 19 Jan 1887 in Port Morien, CB Co., NS.

Christie married Daniel MACASKILL on 8 Jan 1907 in Glace Bay, C.B.Co., NS. Daniel was born in 1885 in Louisbourg, CB Co., NS. He died in 1950.

-Margaret A. MACVICAR was born on 9 Aug 1897 in Glace Bay, C.B.Co., NS.

-Angus D MACVICAR (Angus) was born on 10 Sep 1844 in Loch Lomond, Rich.Co., NS. He died on 26 May 1919 in Broughton, C.B. Co., NS and was buried in MacDonald Private Cemetery, Broughton.

The "D" did not stand for anything in Angus' name. He added it to distinguish himself from his father. Angus moved with his family from Loch Lomond to Broughton (Cow Bay Back Lands)
and farmed the land with his father. As the two older sons, John and Donald, had left home before their father died in 1869, Angus treated the land as his own from this time on. Because of this, he decided to obtain a grant for the land which comprised 170 Acres. Angus had Donald submit a petition for the land grant in February, 1894 and pay a small deposit. Subsequent installments, paid by Angus through Donald, allowed the grant to be issued in April, 1895, but in Donald's name. Unfortunately, Donald refused to transfer the grant to Angus and in 1904, Angus requested the Attorney General to rescind the grant. After an investigation, the grant was rescinded and reissued to Angus in June, 1905. At about the same time, a right-of-way was granted to the Cape Breton Iron and Railway Co. Ltd. to construct a railroad across Angus' property to haul coal from the newly developed Broughton Coal Mine.

The Order-in-Council to rescind the grant to Donald recorded that Angus had improved about 50 Acres of the land for farming. In 1871, it was recorded that the farm consisted of 140 Acres, of which 35 Acres had been improved and 25 Acres were in pasture. Field products included 80 bushels of oats, 150 bushels of potatoes from 2 Acres, and 3 tons of hay from 3 Acres. Angus owned 1 horse, 2 milk cows, 1 goat or bull and 12 sheep. Animal products included 120 pounds of butter and 36 pounds of wool. Rachel prepared 40 pounds of homespun that year. From the remaining wooded property, Angus cut 16 cords of firewood.

Angus D's household not only included his family, mother and sister, but also his young brother-in-law, Alexander MACLEAN, whom he treated as his own son. Alex's mother died while giving birth to him and a twin brother who died at birth. His father Donald died in 1872 and when Angus D married Isabella in 1875, Alex came to live with them. Isabella's two sisters Christie and Annie also came to Broughton. Christie married a neighbour William R. MACDONALD and Annie married Angus D's cousin Donald John MACQUEEN. Another sister Flora may have lived in Broughton for a while before she moved to Boston.

Angus D was a founding member of the Loyal Orange Lodge in Broughton. The will of Angus D MACVICAR divided the land between his sons Angus W, John Alex (Jack) and Duncan.
Angus W and Jack were to receive two full length strips 150 feet wide and Duncan was to receive the rest. However, as Duncan had remained on the farm while the other sons worked elsewhere, Angus W and Jack gave up their portions to Duncan, which was a provision in the will. The will was written 11 July 1916 and read 12 June 1920.

Angus married Isabella MACLEAN, daughter of Donald MACLEAN and Bessie MACLEOD, on 3 Feb 1875 in Cow Bay, CB Co., NS. Isabella was born on 7 Aug 1848 in Grand River, Rich.Co.NS. She died on 8 Sep 1911 in Broughton, C.B. Co., NS and was buried in MacDonald Private Cemetery, Broughton.

Isabella was originally buried in Black Brook Cemetery. When John Ross died in the winter of 1917 he had to be buried in the MacDonald Cemetery as it was nearby. It was feared the same may happen to Angus D so Isabella's remains were disinterred and reburied in Broughton. It is said that Isabella's sister in Boston, Flora, dreamt the night before that Isabella came to her and told her she would be passing by the house but not stopping in. As it happened, the hearse carried the body along the road past the house to the cemetery.

Angus and Isabella had the following children:

When the Census enumerater visited the house in 1901 it was noted that the house was vacant or at least the family was not home.

Thomas continued to work at Halifax Breweries until 1913/14, rising to become a foreman. It appears that the brewery went out of business for in 1914/15 Thomas was an employee at Nova

He was the last surviving member of the Broughton Loyal Orange Lodge founded by his father and his father's cousin Donald John MacQueen. In 1919, he contracted the Spanish Flu from returning World War One veterans and, already inflicted with asthma, he never recovered.
The following is an extract from Broughton Births, Marriages and Deaths by Rev. M.D. MacLeod, Beaton Institute MG13, 153:
"At the General Hospital Glace Bay on Dec. 27th 1921, Mr. Angus McVicar, aged 42 yrs, a Christian man 2 Tim. 4:6"

Angus married Ella Victoria MACDONALD, daughter of John Pringle MACDONALD and Janet HATTIE, on 28 Aug 1907 in Sydney, C.B. Co., NS. Ella was born on 17 Sep 1877 in Truro, Col.Co., NS. She died on 7 Sep 1943 in Sydney, C.B. Co., NS and was buried on 11 Sep 1943 in MacDonald Private Cemetery, Broughton.

Following the death of her husband, Ella was forced to move from Broughton to Sydney, with her young children to find work. They were accompanied by her mother, Janet MACDONALD, and her sister, Cassie, both of whom lived with her until they died. Ella employed herself mostly as a seamstress but she also cleaned floors, took in laundry, or whatever she had to do to earn money.
Unfortunately, the twenties and thirties were not the best of times and it was often difficult to get by, resulting in frequent changes in residence, always trying to find a better place to live. In the early summer of 1922, Ella decided to leave Broughton. Although the family would never live in Broughton again they would spend summers on the old family farm in the years to come with their uncle Duncan.
The first place they could find to live in Sydney was in the north end on Harrington Place in a house that still stands today. It consisted of a few small rooms, hardly big enough for five children and three adults but it was all they could afford. In the fall of 1922, the family moved to Rear Argyle St. Shortly afterwards, the family was dealt another severe blow. Janet MACDONALD's health failed and she died, four days short of her 82nd birthday. During the twenties, the family moved several times again, first to Dougals St., where the Sydney Curling Club is today, then Townsend St. where they shared six rooms for $18.00 a month, a whole house on Central St., and then to Dolbin St. In 1927, Ella adopted a baby girl, Rhea as there was no one to care for her.
In 1933 they moved to a house on Upper Ashby Road. By this time, Angus had begun working for the Dominion Coal Co. in the office and Edward had decided to enter the ministry. In 1934 George worked the summer constructing the new highway between Sydney and St. Peter's and in the fall began working with his brother Angus. During the thirties, the family moved again to the very end of Victoria Road in Whitney Pier, to Gatacre St. and then to 23 Tain St. In 1938, Angus was married to Carrie Hillen and they moved to their own home. Edward was ordained and married Bess Stewart in PEI in 1938. Now the family who lived on Tain St. were Ella and her sister Carrie, George, Isabelle and Hattie, and Rhea, which is the way it remained until 1942 when Rhea married. When Ella died in 1943, only Cassie, George and Isabelle remained together.
